Solar E-Clipse: How Much Motorcycle Can You Actually Get for 60kg?

Electric motorcycles aren't exactly known for being light. Bigger batteries, more range and more kit have pushed kerb weights steadily upwards, but Solar has taken a very different approach with the E-Clipse: 60.8kg, up to 16kW and a claimed 70mph top speed.
60kg. 16kW. Now Things Get Interesting.
Forget the name for a moment. Despite the “Solar” badge, there are no solar panels charging the battery.
The E-Clipse comes in several versions, from the road-focused models to the Race Edition at the top of the range. The latter is claimed to produce up to 16kW, reach 70mph and uses a 3.24kWh, 72V lithium battery pack.
That isn't a huge battery. But then, this isn't a huge motorcycle. The E-Clipse uses a carbon-fibre frame and swingarm as standard, helping keep the weight down to 60.8kg. Solar also offers optional carbon-fibre wheels, which it says cut a further 15kg, taking the weight below 47kg.
The range also includes the Stealth Edition, which swaps the chain for a belt drive, while optional panniers can adds 46 litres of storage. The E-Clipse 2.0 and Race Edition are listed as road legal, although the exact licensing and registration requirements will depend on the market.

The E-Clipse isn't trying to be an electric tourer. With a 3.24kWh battery, the claimed 70-mile range is going to depend heavily on how much time you spend on the throttle, particularly on the more powerful versions.
That puts it somewhere between a lightweight commuter, urban runabout and electric hooligan bike, depending on which configuration you choose.
The BCB Take
Solar hasn't followed the usual electric motorcycle formula of adding more battery, more range and more of basically everything. Instead, it's built something with a very different set of priorities.
The E-Clipse doesn't need to replace a conventional road bike to make sense. A motorcycle doesn't need 200 miles of range to be useful. And it certainly doesn't need it to be fun. Sometimes you just want to throw a leg over, twist the throttle and grin.
At 60.8kg, this thing could be seriously interesting to ride, and light enough to get up the stairs to your apartment.
