A surprise storage locker auction has uncovered a collection of Damon prototype parts and development bikes, offering a rare look at the machines behind one of electric motorcycling’s most ambitious projects.

The Prototypes Behind The Hypersport Dream
RideApart recently reported that a collection of Damon prototype parts has surfaced after a storage locker auction, including a partially assembled Hypersport prototype and other development items from the company’s journey.
At a time when many electric motorcycles were focused on commuters and urban transport, Damon was chasing the superbike crowd. The company wanted to prove an electric motorcycle could deliver the speed, performance and emotion riders expected from a high-performance machine.
Damon’s Hypersport was chasing big numbers, including the company’s Triple 200 target of 200 horsepower, 200 miles of range and a 200mph top speed. The company also promised a suite of rider-assistance technology aimed at improving safety, including its CoPilot system designed to help riders identify potential hazards.
For BCB readers, Damon will be a familiar name. We followed the company closely throughout the HyperSport journey, speaking with co-founder Jay Giraud and later CEO Dom Kwong as Damon’s plans evolved.
The storage auction has revealed a glimpse of Damon’s early development work. According to a BCB source close to the project, the first two prototypes were essentially “Frankensteins”. They were a mix of Yamaha R1 chassis and Zero SR drivetrain components used to test Damon’s early ideas.
These were development mules used to test ideas. They were later superseded by prototypes built from the ground up around Damon’s own motorcycle platform.
That distinction matters. Early development bikes rarely look like the finished machine. They are tools engineers use to answer basic questions: Does the packaging work? Does the powertrain deliver the expected performance? Does the bike handle the way it should?
The auctioned parts offer a snapshot of that process. The messy, experimental stage where motorcycle ideas become real machines.
The BCB Take
There is an easy temptation to look at an early prototype built around another manufacturer’s frame and immediately dismiss it. But that is not how motorcycle development works. Test mules exist because engineers need something to ride, test and break before creating the final machine.
The R1-based prototypes give us a look at how motorcycles are developed, where borrowed parts, temporary solutions and constant changes are all part of the process.
But the real question with Damon was never where it started. It was whether the company could turn that early promise into a Triple 200 electric superbike that riders could actually throw a leg over.
Damon never got a chance to prove it.
