Surron Tightens Its Grip on the Light Bee Design

Surron isn't just protecting the Light Bee anymore. It's trying to draw a legal line around what a lightweight electric off-road bike can look like.
The company says a Chinese court has ruled that several E Ride Pro models infringe its Light Bee design patent. It's the latest move in what is becoming a much wider fight over where the line sits between inspiration and imitation.
Inside the Court Ruling
According to Surron's statement, the Ningbo Intermediate People's Court in Zhejiang Province has issued a first-instance judgment in its favour in a design patent infringement case against companies linked to the E Ride Pro brand.
The court found that several E Ride Pro models, including the E Ride Pro S, SS 2.0, SS 3.0, SR and Mini, use a design that falls within the protection of Surron's registered "Light Electric Off-Road Motorcycle" patent.
The company says the court has ordered the defendants to immediately stop manufacturing, selling and offering the bikes for sale, while awarding Surron RMB 5.44 million (around £560,000 / US$760,000) in damages and legal costs.
It's worth noting that this is a first-instance judgment, meaning the case may still be appealed. For Buck City Biker readers, this won't feel like an isolated dispute.
Earlier this year, we reported on Surron's legal victory over Talaria in the United States, where a jury found that Talaria had infringed Surron's design patent relating to the Light Bee. That case ultimately resulted in a permanent injunction and millions of dollars in damages, marking one of the biggest patent victories the electric motorcycle industry has seen so far. The E Ride Pro case is the latest sign that Surron is prepared to fight for the Light Bee's design.
This isn't the first time Surron has taken this fight to court. Here's how it's unfolded:
2023: Surron sued Talaria in the United States, alleging the company had infringed the Light Bee's design patent.
January 2026: Surron filed fresh patent infringement lawsuits in California against E Ride Pro and Xinghai Hi-Tech, a company linked to 79Bike.
July 2026: Surron says it has now secured a first-instance judgment in China against companies linked to E Ride Pro over the same protected design.
Taken together, it paints a picture of a manufacturer determined to defend not just one motorcycle, but the shape and identity of the lightweight electric off-road segment it helped create.

Some riders will see this as protecting innovation. Others will see it as limiting competition.
The Light Bee changed the market, and plenty of manufacturers have built bikes that follow a similar recipe. Surron now appears determined to find out exactly where that legal boundary sits.
For riders who have bought an E Ride Pro, this isn't an abstract patent dispute. They bought a bike they wanted to ride, not a legal argument between manufacturers. The impact of this battle will depend on what happens next, but it highlights the risk that comes when a growing market is built around similar-looking machines.
If these cases continue to go Surron's way, manufacturers may have to do more than tweak a frame and fit different plastics. The next generation of lightweight e-motos could start looking a lot more original, and that's something every rider will notice.
