Nerva EXE II: BYD’s Blade Battery Two-Wheel Reality Check

BYD’s Blade Battery has been making headlines in electric cars for years, but now it’s getting a proper two-wheel workout in the Nerva EXE II.

The question riders will care about is simple: can battery tech that has built a reputation in the car world deliver the range, reliability and real-world performance needed for bigger, longer-range two-wheelers?

From BYD Battery Tech to European Roads

Spanish electric scooter maker Nerva is putting BYD Blade Battery technology back in the spotlight with the new EXE II maxi scooter. It's the latest version of a model that first arrived in 2022.

The original Nerva EXE was already an interesting proposition. It used BYD battery technology, but was aimed more at proving that electric scooters could handle everyday commuting with decent range and practical performance.

The EXE II takes that idea further. Nerva has kept the partnership with BYD but moved the scooter further into petrol maxi-scooter territory, with more power, more range and a bigger focus on riders who want something capable beyond the city.

The step-through uses three BYD LFP Blade Battery modules with a claimed 7.83 kWh capacity. Nerva says the pack is designed for long life and consistent performance. That’s the stuff riders care about once a bike leaves the showroom and starts racking up miles on the road.

Power comes from an 11 kW motor with a 19 kW (25.5 hp) peak output, giving the EXE II a claimed top speed of 130 km/h (81 mph). Range is listed at up to 180 km (112 miles) in Eco mode, around 140 km (87 miles) in Normal mode, with Sport mode trading distance for stronger performance, putting the EXE II firmly into the European A1 licence category.

It also gets the expected maxi-scooter kit, including ABS, riding modes, an 8.8-inch display, under-seat storage and an integrated AC charger that can take the battery to 80% in around two hours.

The launch is part of a bigger push from Nerva. After building its name in Spain, the company is now moving into Benelux, betting that riders across Europe are ready for an electric step-through that could go head-to-head with petrol maxi scooters.

BYD’s Blade Battery has earned plenty of attention in electric cars. The EXE II is where riders find out if that reputation translates from four wheels to two.

The BCB Take

The original EXE showed that BYD battery tech could work in a scooter. The EXE II is the bigger challenge. More speed, more range and more expectation from riders who are used to petrol maxi scooters.

The specs look good on paper, but riders won’t be judging this on a press release. They’ll want to know how the battery holds up after years of charging, whether the range stays realistic, and if it still feels capable when you’re pushing beyond town riding.

The real test for the Blade Battery isn’t whether it can power an electric scooter, we already know it can. The question is whether it can remove the doubts that keep petrol riders from making the switch.

Ride safe, folks.
