FTN Motion is back with a new e-moto, and the Streetdog XR sticks closely to the formula that’s already winning the Kiwi brand a loyal following. It's still a lightweight, urban-first e-moto with clean lines and modest power, but the new XR now adds a bit more speed and a bit more edge over older models.
Meet FTN Motion
FTN Motion is the New Zealand brand carving out its own lane in urban electric motorcycles. We covered the original Streetdog in our piece, FTN Motion Streetdog: Style Over Speed, Substance Over Stats, and that still feels like the right read on the brand now.
That puts FTN in a similar bracket to Maeving and RGNT, brands building stylish, city-focused electric motorbikes rather than big-mile tourers. FTN gives away a little power on paper, but the appeal is easy enough to see: low running costs, simple ownership and a bike with a bit of personality.
With 4 kW rated output, these bikes land in the same sort of territory as a 50cc-equivalent under current European rules, so that gives you an idea of the lane they’re built for.
Streetdog XR: What’s New?

The Streetdog XR builds on the Streetdog 80 formula, and FTN says the changes are based on rider feedback and are more about refining the ride than changing the bike’s whole identity.
Compared with the older 80, the Streetdog XR keeps the same 72V 2.9 kWh battery and the 4 kW nominal, 7.5 kW peak hub motor, with the only real performance bump being top speed, from 80 to 85 kph (49-53 mph). The more obvious changes are the higher bars, raised suspension, extra ground clearance and longer-travel rear shocks, giving it a bit more margin over potholes and broken tarmac.
The Streetdog XR starts at NZ$9,990, with orders opening in April and deliveries from May, and FTN is currently listing it for New Zealand and Australia.
Streetdog 50: The Easier Way In

The other half of this launch is the Streetdog 50, which opens the door to newer riders. FTN says the 50 gets several of the XR’s updates too, from the higher bars and rear shocks to the redesigned switchgear and matte black frame.
Where the 50 parts company with the XR is speed and licensing. In New Zealand, the Streetdog 50 is positioned as the ‘no licence’ option, a point that is specific to local rules. Even so, the broader idea is clear enough: same core Streetdog appeal with a lower barrier to entry.
The Streetdog 50 starts at NZ$8,990, with orders also opening in April and deliveries from May, with availability focused on New Zealand and Australia.
The BCB Take

FTN Motion still knows exactly what sort of bike it wants to build, and fair play to them for sticking with it. This sort of evolution is exactly what manufacturers do when a platform works, and the best updates are not just a styling exercise. The bones may be familiar, but tweaks to stance, suspension and ergonomics still matter when you're in the saddle.
As for wider rollout, FTN has indicated Europe is the next step once EU compliance is in place, but no launch timing or market details have been confirmed yet.
The Streetdog XR makes a lot more sense once you stop expecting every e-moto to be a motorway missile. For the right rider, that is exactly the point.
Ride safe, folks.
