Chinese Patent Designs: Navigating the Buying Process

Writer: Buck City BikerBuck City Biker

It's a rainy Tuesday night in 2025. You're browsing Chinese bulk ordering platforms only to discover a bunch of e-motorcycles that look identical but seem to be produced by hundreds of different manufacturers. What's going on?

These are referred to as 'Chinese Patent designs.' They consist of various body shapes inspired by popular ICE models from the past decade. For instance, the Kawasaki Z1000, a highly popular model, is now also appreciated as an EV under a Chinese Patent. The same is true for the YZF R3, Ducati Diavel, and the Ducati Panigale.

Not every Chinese bike is like this; actually, the market offers a broad range of excellent OEM bikes, like the EM77 from Insork, which I write about here. Patents represent only a small part of the offerings, yet they are commonly found on Chinese platforms.

How do Chinese Patents Work?

In China, any company can obtain a patent, enabling them to produce and sell that product on the open market. This benefits Chinese companies and aligns with their 'high competition - winner takes all' business culture.

Consequently, in the West, we face a difficult challenge with a vast array of companies building similar-looking products. Adding to the confusion, many manufacturers use the same image catalogue, and there can be a language and culture barrier. All of which means the unsuspecting buyer might not know what they're buying or even from whom.

Made in China: The New Definition

It's not all bad news; in fact, China is at the forefront of EV technology, releasing many new and innovative products each month.

Chinese companies are investing millions in research and development, with Beijing aiming to dominate the global sector. Chinese-owned businesses operate in all key areas of the EV industry, showcasing advanced technology in motors, batteries, and complete vehicle products. In 2025, Chinese EV revenue is projected to reach US$378 billion.*

Chinese-made products are some of the most desirable, innovative, and well-made products on the market (think iPhone). However, from a historical context, China also has a reputation in the West for mass production and less-than-perfect quality control. The Chinese Patent model doesn't help with this issue.

Which One Shouldn't I Buy?

Chinese Patent e-moto products are not all made equally. Manufacturing quality varies significantly, and components range from high-spec, reputable brands to inexpensive, low-end versions. Additionally, there's the issue of obtaining proper certification for road use and whether it is genuine and approved by your local authorities.

All these factors and many more make it challenging to navigate independently. It's tough and takes experience, lots of research, and a good understanding of the regulations and manufacturing processes.

Shipping

Shipping is a whole other ballgame. Trying to get your head around FOB, EXW, D2D, DDP, CIF, and port-side co-loading charges is enough to make anyone cry. You may need an import registration if you plan to do it yourself, and you'll also require a freight forwarder on your local side because you can't just drive to the port. Unfortunately, it doesn't work like that anymore.

Co-loading charges also occur on the domestic side of the port, where your shipping agent has paid for the product to be taken off the ship and placed ready for delivery. If not monitored, these costs can add up to thousands.

Lots of Research, Plenty of Questions

Upon making contact, you might reach the manufacturer directly, though it's more likely that you will connect with a sales agent or distributor. Ensure they evaluate their manufacturers to confirm they produce high-quality, durable, and reliable bikes that meet the road-use specifications for your region. They should have knowledge of the battery cells, which should come from top industry brands and be safety-certified. This also applies to the chargers, which may offer various voltage options to match the local supply in each region.

If you get lucky, you may find they have storage and distribution in your region. This would be an opportunity to ask to test ride the bike, or even just take a long hard look at the build quality. Failing that, pictures and videos are your friend.

Research import duty and tax requirements. Some countries impose a levy on Chinese products. You'll need to consider this in your total costs.

Make sure you will receive all the necessary paperwork for registering your EV. An e-moto without registration, insurance, and tax can't be used legally on the public highway.

Consult a shipping agent to obtain some quotes and compare these with any quotes provided with the product. You may also need a local freight agent to handle the domestic side of delivery if your shipping agent cannot offer this.

Overall, it can be a complex and occasionally costly exercise, but with careful management and patience, you can achieve an excellent e-moto that rivals the performance and durability of leading brands at a lower price point.

Are Chinese Patents Here to Stay?

These products have gained significant popularity in recent years due to their unique blend of heritage lines and a sense of familiarity that resonates with bikers. Many are drawn to the nostalgic designs that hearken back to the great models. Moreover, these e-moto products represent a more affordable entry point into the rapidly growing market.

It is also worth noting that development in this sector is ongoing. As a result, consumers can expect to see new products entering the market periodically, as well as upgraded versions of the most popular designs. The combination of heritage, affordability, and ongoing development makes these products a compelling choice for both seasoned riders and those who are just starting in the e-moto world.

Ride safe, folks.
